Young drivers & Pedestrian training

Posted by Neril Cunliffe on November 9th 2006

Minister thank you for this opportunity.

I wish to raise again child pedestrian training. In Lancashire we deliver a pedestrian training programme with outcomes in excess of Kerb Craft. We have just completed a 3 year research project which will publish shortly. My question is why can Lancashire not receive funding as per the Kerb Craft approach as we can prove conclusively the value of Lancashire's training in relation to Kerb Craft.

Could a fund be created for local authorities to bid into to create, research and deliver new initiatives for young drivers. Also would the Minister support a minimum 12 month learning time for a learner driver using both professional tuition and private practice.
Once again thanks again for this valuable opportunity and I do hope you will see fit to repeat this excercise in the future

Thank you for your reply
You are welcome to see the work of the Lancashire Road Safety Group at any time. More specifically we are about to launch a new interactive resource aimed at young drivers Mentors I would welcome an opportunity to discuss and demonstrate this resource with your department. It tackles the issue of L drivers attaining more skill and knowledge with the use of professional tuition together with their mentor. This will encourage the increase in exposure to driving for a Learner therefore producing an outcome of reduced crashes in their early driving career. In addition red

Kerbcraft and funding

Good news! I've just launched a challenge fund that local authorities can bid against for schemes just like this if they are working in partnership with other road safety providers. Details are elsewhere on the DfT website.

Also after the 1st April you can use the funding from the road camera schemes.

Well done on your programme. I look forward to seeing it in action some time.
